چکیده

[1] We have studied sulfuric acid aerosol nucleation in an atmospheric pressure reaction chamber using a 580 MeV electron beam to ionize the volume of the reaction chamber. We find a clear contribution from ion‐induced nucleation and consider this to be the first unambiguous observation of the ion‐effect on aerosol nucleation using a particle beam under conditions that resemble the Earth’s atmosphere. By comparison with ionization using a gamma source we further show that the nature of the ionizing particles is not important for the ion‐induced component of the nucleation. This implies that inexpensive ionization sources ‐ as opposed to expensive accelerator beams ‐ can be used for investigations of ion‐induced nucleation. Citation: Enghoff, M. B., J. O. P. Particle formation by ion nucleation in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere.

Unexpectedly high concentrations of ultrafine particles were observed over a wide range of latitudes in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. Particle number concentrations and size distributions simulated by a numerical model of ion-induced nucleation, constrained by measured thermodynamic data and observed atmospheric key species, were consistent with the observations. These findings ...

Single ice crystal measurements during nucleation experiments with the depolarization detector IODE

In order to determine the efficiency of different aerosol particles to nucleate ice, an Ice Optical DEpolarization detector (IODE) was developed to distinguish between water droplets and ice crystals in ice nucleation chambers. A laser beam polarized linearly (power: 50 mW, wavelength: 407 nm) is directed through the chamber. The scattered light intensity from particles is measured at a scatter...

Evidence for the role of ion-induced particle formation during an atmospheric nucleation event observed in Tropospheric Ozone Production about the Spring Equinox (TOPSE)

[1] Various in situ measurements show evidence of new particle formation over a wide range of latitudes in the middle to upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. However, the exact mechanism of new particle formation is still uncertain. Using a combination of satellite-derived brightness temperature, air parcel backward trajectory information, in situ measurements of aerosol and precursor gase...

Removal of 10-nm contaminant particles from a wafer surface with supersonic CO2 particle beam

Contaminant control is becoming a major issue of nanoscale device. Cryogenic aerosol beam using micron-sized aerosol particles has long been successfully used to remove contaminant particles (CPs) down to 50nm, and supersonic particle beam using particles smaller than 100nm lowered the limit of cleaning down to 20nm size. In this study, the supersonic particle beam technique that uses nanometer...

Results from the CERN pilot CLOUD experiment

During a 4-week run in October–November 2006, a pilot experiment was performed at the CERN Proton Synchrotron in preparation for the Cosmics Leaving OUtdoor Droplets (CLOUD) experiment, whose aim is to study the possible influence of cosmic rays on clouds. The purpose of the pilot experiment was firstly to carry out exploratory measurements of the effect of ionising particle radiation on aeroso...
